In efforts to balance its carbon footprint and support local communities, Maroma, A Belmond Hotel Riviera Maya has numerous practices and programs in place.
The hotel has invested in a BMS system, technology that controls and optimizes energy and water use. All the property´s lighting is LED, and all electronic equipment has the energy star seal. 100% of the wastewater generated in the property is treated on site and returned to the subsoil, and additional resources are saved through the installation of high efficiency water heaters as well as a high technology cooling system for air conditioners. All facilities have low water consumption equipment, from the kitchens and rooms to the administrative areas. A strict waste management system is in place to reuse, recycle, upcycle, and compost, plus all cleaning chemicals are biodegradable. The property strives for a sustainable supply chain, purchasing from local producers in the Yucatán Peninsula and southern Mexico.
The grounds of Maroma help to protect three species of sea turtles, the dirty-chested parakeet and the white-fronted parrot, and the endemic Melipona bee. In the restaurants, the Executive Chef promotes sustainability as an active member of the “Fishing with a a Future” movement. At least 80% of dishes are of sustainable origin thanks to alliances with farmers in the region and a partnership with the NGO Amigos de Sian Ka’an, cooperatives that have adopted sustainable and selective fishing techniques.
The hotel collaborates with local artisans to upcycle all transparent glass bottles into blown glass amenities for guests, and the “Weaver of Dreams” project which recycling part of textile waste to be made into stuffed animals, economically supporting the women who create them. Bar soaps are recycled in collaboration with the NGO “Sacando Espuma”, who transform them into new ones and donate to communities with restricted access to hygiene products. Additionally, Maroma supports Life for my School (Vida para mi Escuela), which introduces students to biotechnologies and teaches technical skills in permaculture. In alliance with the supplier “Biclas”, all the bicycles used for on-site bike tours are donated to a Mayan community after one year of use.
