Oaxaca Travel Highlights:
- Oaxaca City – The state capital, Oaxaca is stunningly picturesque. Lined with narrow streets and colonial buildings, it has a vibrant art and music scene as well as an abundance of quality restaurants. Producing a great variety of handicrafts, Oaxaca boasts innumerable markets and specialty shops that offer unique creations.
- Central Valleys – This collection of valleys contains an abundance of small villages and pre-Columbian sites just outside of the city center. While providing great opportunities for day trips, the countryside is in itself something of wonder. With one of the world’s oldest and largest trees and interesting indigenous villages along the way, Oaxaca’s central valleys are a fascinating place to explore.
- Puerto Escondido – One of the best surf beaches in Mexico and maybe even the world, Puerto Escondido has a laid-back surfer vibe. Lined with great hotels and restaurants, you will also find numerous palapas and small seafood stands along the sand.
- Sierra Norte – This heavily forested area is home to eight small Zapotec villages. At an altitude of 2200m, the pine and oak forests provide stunning panoramic views and a rich habitat for innumerable animal species. Great for hiking and mountain biking and with alpine cabins complete with wood-burning fires, the area provides an air of serenity outside of the commotion of Oaxaca City.
