There, learn about the Temple of the Seven Dolls and the theories explaining why physically deformed dolls were buried there.

After, head to the historic city center of Mérida, the capital of Yucatán state. Learn about Mérida’s history and contemporary importance, exploring the main square, the cathedral, and the Monument to the Homeland, before heading down El Paseo de Montejo, with its grand, colonial buildings.

Upon completion, head back to the hotel for the rest of the evening at leisure.

Entering the site, come upon one of the most iconic structures at Uxmal, the round-edged Pyramid of the Magician, and learn about its fascinating origin myth. Towards the end of the visit, take the chance to climb one of Uxmal’s impressive pyramids. At the top, find intricate carvings and an impressive vista over the ancient city that peeks out through the trees.

Next, head to Kabah, thought to mean ‘strong hand’ in ancient Maya. This small archeological site set deep in the jungle is roughly 200 square meters. A guide will lead an exploration of the palaces, temples, and other residential structures at the site.

At the end of the visit, enjoy a traditional Yucatecan lunch (meal cost not included) at the nearby Hacienda San Pedro Ochil before being driven back to the hotel.

Overnight: Chablé Resort

Day 4: Private tour of Hacienda Sotuta de Peón, transfer to Chichen Itza

Set among vast acres of gardens and agave plantations, Hacienda Sotuta de Peón dates to 1858. A private guide will take guests on a journey through the history of Mérida’s haciendas and the production of henequen, a strong fiber derived from the agave plant, known at the time as green gold since it was so lucrative.

Walk around the rooms of the hacienda, admiring its Italian-tiled floors and imported period furniture. Walk through various stages of history and see how henequen was produced through arduous manual work before the industrial revolution in Europe, when machines were imported to Mexico, making the work much easier. Also learn about the dark history of the haciendas and their entanglements with slavery.

After, enjoy a private ride on a mule-drawn ‘truck’ and journey through the acres of agave plantation towards a cenote (ancient sinkhole) that sits within the hacienda grounds. Swim in the easily accessible cenote, which is 20-meters deep and has lights underwater.

Afterward, enjoy lunch at the hacienda’s restaurant (meal not included) before heading towards Chichen Itza. Settle into a charming hotel for the rest of the evening at leisure.

Also see El Castillo (also known as the Temple of Kukulkan), Chichen Itza’s world-famous stepped pyramid. Learn about the ingenious architecture that results in the figure of a snake descending and ascending its steps during the equinox.
